Tools for developing your ear alongside the score: chord recognition, interval training, and a chromatic guitar tuner.
A quiz that plays a chord from the current score and asks you to identify it. Ties ear training directly to the music you're learning. Open the Chord Ear tab in the Tools panel.
Chords are played via AlphaSynth (the same audio engine that plays back the score) for a realistic guitar sound.
An alternate ear training path: enable flashcard mode in the Chord Chart (hover to reveal chord names). Play back the song and try to name each chord before it reaches that bar, then hover to check. Works well alongside Chord Ear as a more contextual drill.
Trains interval recognition (the distance between two notes). Covers all 11 intervals from minor 2nd to major 7th. Open the Interval Ear tab in the Tools panel.
Notes are generated via Web Audio oscillators at concert pitch. The root note is randomized each round to prevent pattern-matching on the pitch alone.
| Interval | Example (from C) | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Minor 2nd | C → C# | Dissonant, tense |
| Major 2nd | C → D | Stepwise, neutral |
| Minor 3rd | C → Eb | Dark, minor feel |
| Major 3rd | C → E | Bright, major feel |
| Perfect 4th | C → F | Open, stable |
| Tritone | C → F# | Unstable, edgy |
| Perfect 5th | C → G | Hollow, strong |
| Minor 6th | C → Ab | Melancholic |
| Major 6th | C → A | Sweet, open |
| Minor 7th | C → Bb | Bluesy, dominant |
| Major 7th | C → B | Bright, tense |
A chromatic tuner that listens to your microphone and displays the nearest note + cents deviation. Open the Tuner tab in the Tools panel.
The tuner uses AudioContext + autocorrelation pitch detection - same algorithm as most hardware chromatic tuners. Works best in a quiet environment.
| String | Note | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| 6 (low E) | E2 | 82.4 Hz |
| 5 (A) | A2 | 110.0 Hz |
| 4 (D) | D3 | 146.8 Hz |
| 3 (G) | G3 | 196.0 Hz |
| 2 (B) | B3 | 246.9 Hz |
| 1 (high E) | E4 | 329.6 Hz |
Riffwork's tuner is chromatic - it identifies any note, so it works for any tuning. Open the Quick Tuning Presets popup (♭≡ button in the player bar) to see target notes for 12 common alternate tunings.
